In late October, Iranian police announced the arrest of five members of a gang who had scammed millions of dollars from people on the false promise of sending them to study in foreign universities.
Iranian police spokesperson, Mehdi Hajian, said the scammers used social media advertising to claim they could send students to Turkey to study medicine. As part of the scam the gang sent victims fake student identity cards and admission papers for Turkish universities.
The gang charged each victim between US$15,600 and $31,000. Police believe that as many as 200 students and their families were scammed, and the gang could have stolen as much as $6.25 million.
Five members of the gang are in custody and the Iranian police are cooperating with Interpol to find and catch the others.
