The Turkey Scholarships program provides financial support and also ensures university placement for students.
When the program started in 2012 there were 42,000 applications. In 2019 there were 145,700 applications from students from 167 countries. Around 5,000 scholarships are awarded to international students each year.
International students who are awarded scholarships travel to Turkey and receive language training for a year. After that they are placed at their preferred university. The program also covers living costs and includes monthly pocket money.
The Turkey Scholarships program is run by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). YTB President Abdullah Eren said:
We are trying to increase and develop scholarship opportunities in the face of increasing interest and demand. This year we have extended the deadline for the application process because of the interest.
There are currently about 17,000 scholarship holders studying in Turkey. YTB aims to increase that number to 25,000 by 2023.
