AgentBee’s ongoing research into incidents of unprofessional and dishonest conduct by education agents revealed the Australian case of Shamna Singh, reported in 2019.

Shamna Singh is also known as Marleen Charan.

Singh was arrested by Victoria Police in January 2019 as she tried to depart Australia and travel to India. She was charged with:

  • obtaining property by deception
  • negligently dealing with proceeds of crime
  • falsely representing herself as a registered migration agent, and
  • charging fees for migration representations.

The charges related to allegations that Shamna Singh duped multiple international students out of tens of thousands of dollars on the promise of securing permanent residency and work visas in Australia. It was alleged that she falsely presented herself as a migration agent before her business – Australian Immigration Legal Support Centre – was deregistered in early 2017.
