As international students stream in to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport they’re met by the welcoming iCent team.

For almost two weeks the iCent team has been assisting international students as they arrive at terminals 1 and 3. Up to eight team members patrol the airport with signs to direct incoming international students to the iCent welcome booth.  There they get a friendly face and a welcome kit.

The man behind iCent is Ganesh Neelanjanmath. He arrived in Canada from India in 2010 as an international student to study project management. When he walked out of the airport he had a strong feeling of loneliness and felt that had no guidance to find his way in a new country.

A few years later iCent was born – with the aim of supporting newly arrived international students to find their way in Canada.

The airport welcome initiative has 10 Canadian partner universities, inlcuding:

And Ganesh’s team has all the language bases covered, with team members who speak Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish and other languages ready to help overwhelmed new international students in their native tongue.
